This article follows on from my other short articles on the cyber challenges facing SMEs, based on the seven categories of challenges reported by ENISA, the European version of NCSC, who have estimated that across Europe, 46% of businesses have been hit and a quarter of charities, in the last 12 months. This figure does rise for medium size businesses, to 68%, but smaller businesses are still very much at risk.

CYBER SECURITY CHALLENGES FACING BUSINESSES TODAY – PART 2

As we start the return to normality following the last lockdown, with offices starting to open up, although home working is with us now and is unlikely to go away, the cyber criminals are getting busy as well. The Guardian have reported that the head of the UK agency GCHQ, has disclosed that the number of ransomware attacks on British institutions has doubled in the past year. ‘Jeremy Fleming, the director of GCHQ, said locking files and data on a user’s computer and demanding payment for their release had become increasingly popular among criminals because it was “largely uncontested” and highly profitable.’

There is a general belief amongst SMEs that cyberattacks only happen to large organisations and that SMEs are simply too small a target to get hit. However survey after survey finds that all enterprises can be, and are, attacked regardless of size and the information they store. Ransomware is being reported as Britains ‘biggest peril’. Now you might not agree with that, given all that’s going on at the moment, but in Cyber security terms, and in Cyber crime terms, then it is certainly up there with the best of them.
